Who Said It: Eric Garcetti or Donald Trump?

Last weekend at a teach-in hosted by DSA Long Beach, we came up with a list of quotes from Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti and President Donald Trump. We asked the audience to guess who said which quotes.

The crowd — a generally very well-informed group — was often very, very wrong, illustrating that the politics between these two people might be a lot closer than the mainstream two-party narrative suggests.

We believe it’s a useful (and scary) exercise to examine the things our local elected politicians say on the record to get a more honest glimpse of who these politicians are and who they ultimately serve at the end of the day.

"[ICE should] do its job."

Correct! Wrong!

"America is a Nation that believes in the power of redemption. America is a Nation that believes in second chances - and America is a Nation that believes that the best is always yet to come! #PrisonReform"

Correct! Wrong!

"It's not just, L.A. and America is here to save the Olympics. The Olympics is here to save America and L.A. too. It works both directions. We need each other."

Correct! Wrong!

"To build trust in our communities since for instance we just took down MS-13 in a huge two-year long operation, very dangerous gang, we were able to do that."

Correct! Wrong!

"MS-13 takes advantage of glaring loopholes in our immigration laws to infiltrate our country."

Correct! Wrong!

"Working hard to get the Olympics...Stay tuned!"

Correct! Wrong!

"When it comes to public safety, I listen to police chiefs and cops, not to a cable-news station."

Correct! Wrong!

"Today, we heard the experiences of law enforcement professionals and community leaders working to combat the threat of MS-13, and the reforms we need from Congress to defeat it."

Correct! Wrong!

"Serena Williams is a special player. After winning the Gold for the US in the Olympics, it looks like she will also win the US Open."

Correct! Wrong!
