NOlympics LA was launched in 2017 as a coalition of over two dozen partner orgs based in LA and California. It has grown to include 40+ organizations and participate in a growing transnational movement with dozens of groups around the world in the NOlympics Anywhere Movement.
Hosting the Olympics puts poor, working-class, racialized, immigrant, LGBTIQ+, and unhoused Angelenos at increased risk by intensifying problems of displacement and gentrification, deportation, militarization and surveillance, the criminalization of informal economies, environmental destruction, corruption, the hijacking of public agendas and resources, and the erosion of democracy.
These harms outweigh any possible so-called ‘benefits’ or ‘opportunities’ of hosting, most of which have been exaggerated, or were simply never intended to serve poor and working-class Angelenos.
In the wake of the horrific 2025 fires, committing LA’s resources towards these Games is violently negligent.
We reject efforts to co-opt community organizations to produce false narratives about the ‘benefits’ or ‘opportunities’ of hosting a mega-event.
LA’s 2028 Olympics are undemocratic and illegitimate and we do not want them here.
There is no reform that will make this a ‘good’ Olympics.
The best option for LA is still NO Olympics.
We will fight to prevent LA from using the 2028 Olympics as a justification to host more catastrophic mega-events in the future.
We will fight to defend our communities.
We will continue our fight for a more just Los Angeles, for the abolition of institutions and systems that perpetuate racial-capitalist violence, for new structures and ways of relating to each other that affirm and sustain life, and for the power to shape our own city, neighborhoods, and collective futures.
